5S is a workplace organization method developed from five Japanese principles: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke—commonly translated as Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. More than a housekeeping program, 5S creates a visual workplace where abnormalities are easier to recognize, work is simpler to perform and teams take responsibility for their own environment.

Seiton — Set in Order: Every necessary item is assigned a clearly identified location that is safe and convenient to use. Tool boards, marked storage zones, material labels, aisle lines and quantity limits make the correct arrangement visible at a glance. A well-organized workstation reduces searching, unnecessary movement and delays between operations.
Seiso — Shine: Cleaning is combined with inspection. Floors, machines, worktables and shared areas are maintained regularly, while operators look for loose parts, wear, leaks or other early signs of abnormality. In this way, cleanliness supports equipment reliability, product quality and workplace safety.
Seiketsu — Standardize: The first three practices become consistent daily routines through visual standards, checklists, responsibilities and agreed methods. Standards help different shifts and production teams maintain the same working conditions, making deviations easier to identify and correct.
Shitsuke — Sustain: 5S becomes a lasting habit through training, daily participation, periodic assessment and continuous follow-up. The purpose is not to prepare the factory only for an audit or customer visit, but to make orderly and disciplined working practices part of everyday culture.
